Why does my dog howl at the sky whenever I imitate dogs howling?

Whenever I make noises that sound like howling, my dog will eventually howl along with me, or try to muffle me with her shoulder. It seems odd though, because when she does howl she looks straight up like a wolf, and she almost seems to do it against her will. She also tends to imitate and try to match the noises I make.

Answer:
If you notice when dogs and wolves howl they don't have an echo so they can accurately find the location of pack members! Anyway, being pack animals canines use howling for long distance communication and when one howls naturally any wolves in the vicinity will howl in response. They probably think your looking for someone, so they are helping you. ;)

Also when they tilt their head back it in order to open the throat and allow a full clear sound out like a singer does.
